English Masses in Rome

Although there are more than 1,000 churches in Rome, it might still be difficult to find a Mass in English. On this page, we have therefore gathered some different churches where you can go to Mass in English during your pilgrimage.

Roman Station Liturgy

During Lent each year, the North American College follows the ancient tradition of the Roman stational liturgy. All are invited to join us for the celebration of English Mass each day at 7am (except Ash Wednesday, which is at 6:45am). Please note that we do not celebrate neither Sunday Mass nor the Paschal Triduum at the station churches. We are excited to welcome you to join us on this Lenten pilgrimage in 2023!

For more information of the station churches, please visit the Roman Stational Liturgy page.

The churches below offer year-round English Masses, presented in order of vicinity to St. Peter’s Square.

St. Peter’s Basilica

Holy Mass in English:

First Saturday of each month at 7:15 a.m.

On the first Saturday of each month, there is Holy Mass celebrated in English right by the tomb of St. Peter, for the intention of praying for the Church. We recommend arriving at St. Peter’s by 6:45 a.m. in order to allow plenty of time to pass through security. Once inside the Basilica, the meeting point is outside the sacristy (right next to the altar of St. Joseph). The dates for 2024 are:

  • January – No Mass due to the Feast of the Epiphany
  • February 3, 2024
  • March 2, 2024
  • April 6, 2024
  • May 4, 2024
  • June 1, 2024
  • July 6, 2024
  • August 3, 2024
  • September 7, 2024
  • October 5, 2024

The Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia is only three blocks from St. Peter’s Square on Via dei Penitenzieri 12 and has been hosting pilgrims to Rome since the 8th century. This Mass always ends with enough time to have a quick coffee and then walk over to St. Peter’s Square in time for the Sunday Angelus with the Holy Father. The Church of Santo Spirito is also the official Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Rome and houses relics of both St. Faustina and St. John Paul II.
