Confessions in English

In the Major Basilicas
Many of the Major Basilicas in Rome regularly offer the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in English and other major languages. St. Peter’s Basilica always have at least one English speaking confessor available, and St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major have English speaking priests hearing confessions most of the days.

Confessions are normally from the time the Basilica opens until 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m., followed by a siesta break for the confessor. Around 4:00 p.m., confessions normally resume again until the closing of the Basilicas.

At the Visitors’ Office
When you request tickets for a Papal event through our office, you will receive a confirmation by email indicating the date and time the tickets will be available for collection. During this time, some of the American and Australian student priests at the Casa Santa Maria are usually also available to hear the confessions of the pilgrims to help you receive a plenary indulgence when you receive the Holy Father’s blessing.
