Internet & Computer Questions Print this Page

We highly recommend bringing a personal computer!  Most guys prefer laptops for the portability. Our network is compatible with Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Here are Some Commonly Asked Questions:

Question 1:  Is NAC Wireless? Only the library and lounge.

  • Your room is wired for the Internet.
  • So Bring a Cat5 Network Cable with You!  The length of the cable you bring will determine how you arrange your furniture.  So we recommend bringing a longer cable.
  • Many seminarians bring their own wireless routers from home.  This allows you to connect all of your devices very easily and gives you flexibility on your room furniture arrangement.

Question 2: Does NAC Provide Any Software for Students? Yes!

  • Antivirus Software is Provided! You DO NOT need to renew a different antivirus subscription (i.e. Norton, Symantec, Trend Micro, AVG, etc.)

Question 3: Will I Have Email @ NAC? Yes!

  • You will be assigned an email address (<username>@pnac.org) when you arrive.
  • You will be able to access your email through a web browser
    (https://mailserver.pnac.org/exchange)
  • There will also be configuration settings that will be available when you arrive for a mail client (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Mac Mail, Thunderbird, etc.)
  • As this is a common means of communication in the College, you will be responsible for checking this email address daily.
  • You can access other e-mail accounts through the internet connections available here.

Question 4: Will I Be Able to Print at NAC? Yes!

  • NAC has 2 Computer Rooms:  One in the Library, and a Computer Lab in the Basement.
  • Both Have Common Use B&W Laser Printers(The College Supplies Paper and Toner for these Printers)
  • You can transfer files to the College Computers with a USB Flash Drive.
  • Some guys still prefer to have the convenience of their own printer in their room.  We highly recommend buying a printer in Rome, most shipped will not work here.
  • The paper size in Rome is A4 (21 x 29.7 cm).  It is slightly thinner and slightly longer than American Letter sized paper.  Again, the college provides paper.

Question 5: How Do Guys Take Notes at the University?

  • Some students find it helpful to take their notes on the computer. The universities accommodate this.  The Gregorian and Santa Croce have wireless in the classrooms.  The Angelicum has wireless in a common room on campus.  Guys with older laptops have discovered that while classrooms do have outlets, they aren’t always conveniently located.
  • Some students record lectures at the university.  Most professors are fine with this.
  • Many students take handwritten notes.

Question 6: Can I make phone calls or talk to friends through the Internet? Yes.

  • You can use a service like Skype, AOL Instant Messenger, Apple iChat, Google Talk to do computer-to-computer voice and video conferencing.
  • A Internet phone service like Skype also allows you to cheaply call American phone numbers.
  • If you plan on making calls through your computer, bring a headset with a microphone!
  • Call quality ranges from poor to fair.

Question 7: I want to upgrade some components in my laptop (like memory, etc.).  Should I do that in the US or in Rome?

  • We strongly recommend doing any planned computer service before coming over.
    • The Parts Will Be Cheaper
    • The Service Will Be Better
    • It Will Take Less Time
  • That being said, there are some computer guys in the house who can help with basic computer problems.
  • Also, bring ALL installation and software CDs and DVDs for your computer in case your computer needs to be reloaded.
