The student
organization, Student Activities Committee (STUAC), operates a number of
services, funds facilities, and funds various activities throughout the
year. Student services
will be available to students shortly after their arrival at the College. You may want to take a look at the facilities here at the college
to determine what equipment or supplies you should bring.
A student-run
store has reasonable prices on often-used items, such as stationery and
school supplies, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, tissues, shaving
cream, razors (Gillette brand Sensor & Mach III razor blades but not
handles), snack foods, American coffee, floppy disks, and cleaning
supplies. While there is not as wide a variety of brand names as may be
found at a local store, there is a good array of items at prices
competitive with Roman stores. Students may wish to bring personal
stationery such as thank you cards and greeting cards. (Although a good
variety of personal stationery is available at local stores, English
language cards for birthdays, holidays, etc. can be hard to find). While KNAC does not carry everything a seminarian need, it is
convenient option for many of the day to day items such as toiletries and
snacks.
N.B. If a student wishes to use a specific brand of a toiletry item, then
supplies should be shipped as specific brands may be hard to find.
Italian
newspapers as well as “The International Herald Tribune” and “USA
Today” are available in the Lounge. A television room is available for
DVD and VHS videos. American news is often shown after lunch, and there is
often a movie in the evening. VHS cassettes and DVDs from North America
are compatible with the equipment. The lounge has a pool table and 2 dart
boards that are often used by seminarians, so if you have a pool stick,
bring it. The Lounge has an extensive movie library and sells soft drinks,
beer, snacks, ice cream, and other refreshments several times a day. It
also sells Vatican and U.S. Postage stamps, city bus tickets,
international phone cards, and photocopy cards.
5th
Floor Kitchen
The fifth floor kitchen and patio are used for a variety of functions. The kitchen is a new facility that can be signed out by seminarians for meals that they would like to cook. Different foods can be purchased at grocery stores or outdoor markets nearby. It is also used for class dinners and other small meals and social gatherings. In addition, on each residential wing there is also a small kitchen available for seminarian use... buon
appetito!
The bowling alley is one of the more unique facilities at the college. It is a gift from Pope John XXIII after he was given the facility but thought that the men at the North American College would appreciate it more than he would. It has two lanes and is open any time. There are also plenty of bowling balls and shoes, unless you are a real bowling pro and would like to bring your own. There are occasional tournaments in addition to the regular play just for enjoyment's sake.
The college theater is used on a regular basis for formation and rector's conferences. It is also home to the beloved New Man Show.
The wood shop has been recently renewed and revitalized. It has many power tools and equipment and also a limited stock of various wood for use in student projects. A number of students have constructed lofts, cabinets, and shelves for their rooms in the shop. The shop was also used to construct the sets for the New Man Show.
