53 seminarians were instituted to the Ministry of Acolyte on Sunday, April 6, bringing them one step closer to the sacrament of Holy Orders.  His Excellency, Archbishop Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong, Secretary for Seminaries in the Congregation for Clergy, celebrated the Mass and the Rite of Institution in the Immaculate Conception Chapel.  In his homily Archbishop Patrón Wongexhorted the new acolytes and the rest of the community to focus on remaining friends with Jesus, on growing in that unique relationship each person has with the Son of God.

In the Rite of Institution of Acolytes, each man kneels before the bishop and receives a paten  from him, symbolic of the new role the acolyte fulfills at Mass, caring for the Eucharist and the Eucharistic vessels.  As the bishop presents the ciborium to the new acolyte, he says, “Take this vessel with bread for the celebration of the eucharist. Make your life worthy of your service at the table of the Lord and of his Church.”

The new acolytes will immediately begin serving Mass each day at the College and will perform a variety of other functions related to their new ministry, especially when they return home this summer.
